I started playing electric bass in grade 7. In high school I played in a rock band. We played many small venues and were the backup band on a few larger shows. At that time I worked in my father’s wood shop. I couldn’t afford the basses I wanted so I made them, and still play them today. In my early twenties I was asked if I would be interested in doing guitar repair for a music store my friend was a partner in. Being young and ambitious, I said yes. I learned a lot in the years following, especially in electronics. After getting married in my late twenties, I gave up playing. In my early thirties I went back to school and earned a diploma in Engineering Design Drafting. Late in my career in oil and gas I got the itch to start playing again. I bought an acoustic bass from a friend that needed the bridge repaired. I loved playing that bass so much that I decided to take a course in making acoustic guitars. After that I made my first acoustic bass and several acoustic guitars.
Having always wanted a double bass, I bought one in my late forties and started studying jazz under one of Calgary’s top jazz bass player. He pushed me into going out and playing with others. I started playing with Westwinds Silver Concert Band because their jazz band already had a bass player. The only problem was they wanted me to play with a bow. I started studying under a bass player from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. I enjoyed the challenge of playing classical music and am currently focusing on this style of playing. I'm now playing in the Calgary Community String Orchestra (CCSO). The Bass I'm playing in the picture, I made.
With Calgary’s oil and gas market in a decline, I decided to turn my hobby into a career and open up my own shop. I focus mainly on repairing and selling orchestral stringed instruments and now with a larger emphasis on guitars and basses.
